Worker Profile from GIG
This profile is about Lupita Perez. Lupita Perez is a “bus driver”. She said people prefer calling him “bus operator”. She has no idea what the difference is. She used to work at an elementary school as a teacher’s assistant. She felt the job is okay, but the money wasn’t there. Once a neighbor told her that the Transit Authority was hiring for part-time, so she went to apply the job and she think the benefits and insurance are better than the prior job. She is a single mom so she has to think of that stuff, then this job turned out to be a career. She works twelve to thirteen hours a day, and five days a week. Generally, she feels the job is fine, she drives all different routes, most of people treat her are nice. For example the 81 which is the busiest line in the country. The people on the 81 always say, “Hi, how are you?” “Good morning”. They are so nice to her. Basically they are poor people. The 81 is basically what they consider the low-class passengers. On the other hand, on the 401 which line is in downtown L.A. People are always complaining about her for all of the little things. Even though they are higher educated, they cannot understand why the bus are few seconds late or a few seconds early in the heavy traffic. She is always dealing with teenagers, people, drunks, drug addicts, or prostitutes. Sometimes it does get dangerous. Once a strange guy stay on her bus for long time and that guy was found carry a machete by LAPD. If she hadn’t come across LAPD, God knows what would have happened. But she also mention those situation are rare.
The story about Lupita Perez let me know the real life of bus driver. The job is kind of boring just drive. It’s still surprise to me. Firstly, she mention the people on the 81 are pool and they treat her nice but the rich people on the 401 treat her like shit. I cannot find the benefits of higher educated and the milk of human kindness. Secondly, this job is dangerous but she still working on it. Finally, her schedule is long and terrible so that her partner doesn’t believe her! She is facing the stress from the job and family. She is a brave woman. She work as this job is for take care of her children. She is a great mom.
