Reflection of The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks
After reading The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, I think the book is heavy. I believe so many readers have the same fell. We have to think about immoral, ethic and the medical research as a patients what right we have…
First section of the book is “Life”, I know a lot of details of the women- Henrietta Lacks, a poor black tobacco farmer in Baltimore. Her mother dead when she was birth then her father left her to her grandfather. She lived together with her grandfather and cousins. Her childhood seems is busy daily life but I think that is simple and peaceful. She was so happy with her cousins at that time. In her cousins’ eyes she was a helpful and kind person, so am I .suddenly, author describe a picture that Henrietta got sick and after diagnosis doctor knew it was cancer! This is very strong contrast, I feel like someone hit my chest hardly.
Sections Death and Immortality were wrote the situation of Lacks family and how is going the medical research about HeLa cells. Henrietta’s cells are immortal but her family didn’t know that until early in 70s, 20 years late after her dead. HeLa cells were grown and sold to all of the world, but her family did not get any benefit from the cells, even her family can’t afford health insurance. This is so sad. This book shows us deeply about the medical research history sad nowadays situations. About Henrietta and her family is vivid.
I like this book, it is worth to reading more than one time.
