A bodhisattva is an ordinary person who takes up a course of selfless service in one's life. In Bubdhism, a bodhisattva is an enlightened being who has undergone many stages of suffering and has ultimately reached asublime state. Motivated by great compassion toward others, a bodhisattva embraces qualities like self-sacrifice and determination to free others from suffering.
