GATTACA
This film is imagining a future society driven by eugenics where children are selected through genetic diagnosis to ensure they possess the best hereditary traits of their parents. The film centers on Vincent Freeman, who was conceived outside of the eugenics program. He was born the natural way. The doctor tell his parents that he has a high chance of having some health problems such as heart problem; shortsightedness etc. His parents decide to have one more child by using the eugenics program and then he has a brother, Anton Freeman. Vincent uses his whole life to fight against the society, and struggles to overcome genetic discrimination to realize his dream of traveling into space. He tries his best to improving himself to prove he can do better than the “eugenic baby”.
Living in this kind of society is very hard for Vincent, because everywhere requires perfect genes. He couldn’t go to a good school and find a good job. Just because Vincent is normal that means he had a kind of “disability”. The society rejects people like Vincent. But Vincent is crazy about sky and star. He wants to achieve his dream so he find a guy who is named Eugene Morrow. Eugene was born with the eugenics program but unfortunately Eugene had been injured in a car accident and he was paralyzed so he couldn’t find a job even though he has perfect genes. Vincent "buys" Eugene's identity and uses his "valid" DNA in blood, hair and tissue that can pass the Gattaca’s screening. Gattaca is a corporation with a aerospace program that can make his dream come true. Vincent and Eugene are living together, I feel they look like brothers lately. In the end, Vincent made his dream come true but Eugene took his own life when Vincent went to space… that is so sad!
I like this film, even though it’s so cold. I feel that kind of society in the film is so terrible! Who wants to live in there? Even though you are perfect like Eugene, you can't grantee accident won't happen. Once Eugene climb the stairs without legs was very hard, and the spiral stairs like the genetic map. I think the director is implicating this society still hard to live for the people who have perfect gene. The reason for Eugene kill himself is that he is useless after Vincent achieve his dream. In addition, I don’t believe that all families can pay for the high level gene technology. That will cause rich people to become richer because their children can be perfect, but poor people will still poor because they are normal. I can’t imagine how
this comes true!
